In January 1986, US President Ronald Reagan signed a decree designating the third Monday of January each year as Martin Luther King Jr. Day to commemorate the civil rights leader and designated it as a federal holiday. So far, there are only three instances in the US where personal commemorative days are designated as statutory holidays: Abraham Lincoln Day, George Washington Day (also known as Presidents’ Day), and Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Martin Luther King Jr. is the only non-US president to have received this honor, and the only African American to have it.
Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia, US. On August 28, 1963, he delivered his famous speech “I Have a Dream”. Under his and several civil rights leaders’ promotion, the US Congress passed the Civil Rights Act in 1964, declaring racial segregation and discrimination policies illegal. On April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. was shot in the throat by an assassin on a hotel balcony while leading a strike movement in Memphis, Tennessee, at the age of 39.
